Launched in February 2011 by the Dread Pirate Roberts (Ross Ulbricht), Silk Road was shut down by the FBI on October 2, 2013, came back as Silk Road 2.0, and was taken down by the Feds again.
In 2015 Ross was sentenced to two life sentences plus 40 years, without parole, for creating the site. After more than eleven years in prison and a decade of campaigning by his family and supporters, he was pardoned in January 2025. Ross is free.
